Proper firearm refinishing involves more than applying a new finish. The condition of the metal, previous repairs, damaged or missing components, worn barrels, altered markings, and mechanical issues can all affect the scope of a project.

RGS provides the supporting gunsmithing and metalwork needed to complete factory-style refinishing and more extensive firearm restorations under one coordinated project. After evaluating the firearm, we identify the work necessary to achieve the intended appearance and function without automatically pushing the project beyond what it needs.

Historical Metal Preparation & Pit Removal

Metal preparation determines the final quality of any blued or refinished firearm. Depending on the firearm’s condition and the intended result, the work may include surface cleaning, polishing, draw filing, localized pit removal, contour correction, and preservation or restoration of original markings. We take particular care to maintain flat surfaces, sharp edges, screw holes, and factory lines rather than simply buffing until the damage disappears.

Supporting Repair & Component Work

During a refinishing or restoration project, worn, damaged, altered, or missing components may need attention before the firearm can be completed properly. When necessary, we can repair selected parts, source suitable replacements when available, or coordinate component work as part of the larger project. These services are generally performed in support of RGS refinishing and restoration work.

Precision Re-Barreling & Caliber Conversions

Older firearms may have barrels that are badly worn, corroded, cut short, or chambered for cartridges that are difficult to obtain or challenging to make perform well. RGS provides precision re-barreling, chambering, and appropriate caliber conversions for classic rifles. For example, a rifle originally chambered in .38-56 may be a practical candidate for conversion to .45-70 when the original barrel is no longer serviceable and ammunition availability or performance makes the original chambering impractical. Each conversion is evaluated according to the firearm, action, barrel condition, intended use, and the customer’s goals.

Re-barreling and caliber-conversion work may be performed as a standalone service or incorporated into a larger refinishing or restoration project.

Factory Markings, Lettering & Engraving

Refinishing and restoration work can require worn or damaged factory lettering, proof marks, model designations, and other markings to be preserved or restored. RGS can reproduce selected markings with appropriate roll dies or coordinate engraving work when the original details cannot be retained through metal preparation alone. This work is evaluated as part of the overall project so the depth, placement, style, and finished appearance remain appropriate for the firearm.
