Hot salt bluing became the standard factory finish on many rifles, shotguns, revolvers, and pistols manufactured during and after World War II. When combined with the appropriate metal preparation, it produces the uniform blue-black appearance associated with classic factory-finished firearms. Hot bluing is an excellent choice for returning an original firearm to its factory-correct appearance, as well as refinishing worn working firearms, hunting guns, and collectible shooters without turning every project into a complete historical restoration.
Factory-Correct Polishing & Luster Levels
The final appearance of a hot-blued firearm depends largely on the metal preparation and polishing performed before it enters the bluing bath. Different manufacturers used distinct polish levels and surface textures, from the deep, glossy finish associated with classic Sako and Weatherby rifles to the refined blue appearance found on early Colt Pythons.
